Helpful Tips For Moving With Children

When it comes to moving, the process can be challenging any way you put it. From packing and moving an entire house full of belongings to adapting to your new surroundings, moving is a huge undertaking for anybody, and it can especially be difficult for younger children. If your family is planning to move in the near future, we’ve got some tips to keep in mind to help the process go smoother.

  1. Talk to your children as soon as possible: Don’t wait until the packing process begins to break the news to your kids. As soon as you know you’re going to be moving to a new home, sit down and talk to your children about what they can expect in the days and weeks to come. We all know younger children are curious, so it’s important that you answer any questions they may have.
  2. Create a to do list/moving plan early in the process: Packing, cleaning, unpacking, new surroundings – whether you’re moving across town or across the country, moving has a lot of components and takes a lot of planning and logistics. And of course, things don’t always go as planned, but it’s up to you to determine how smoothly the process goes. Work with your children to create a list of chores and tasks that they can help complete leading up to moving day.
  3. Stick to your normal routines: This may be a challenge but make a conscious effort to stick to your normal routine. Maybe your children are accustomed to having sleepovers with their friends every other Friday night or maybe you go out to your favorite restaurant for dinner every Tuesday. Change is tough for many of us, so sticking to normal routines can help bring some peace of mind leading up to a period full of change.
  4. If possible, show your kids around the new home: If you’re moving a long distance, this may not be practical for you or your kids and pictures may have to do until moving day. But if your new home is nearby, and if possible, consider taking the time to show your children around their new digs prior to moving day. This is a great opportunity to let them choose their new rooms, check out the backyard, and take a walk around the neighborhood. If you’re not able to take a tour of the home, consider doing a drive by and checking out the neighborhood.
  5. Have a family fun night and share your memories about your home: Time to order your favorite carryout, break out the boardgames, gather around a bonfire, or whatever it takes to enjoy yourselves! Take the time to let your children speak their mind and share their favorite memories made at your home. Whether it was a special birthday party, bringing home a new pet, or Christmas morning, this is bound to bring a smile to your face.
  6. Pack a moving day kit: The big day is near and you’re going to want to keep the kids occupied. Have your kids pack a backpack full of their favorite toys, electronics, snacks, etc. If it’s going to take some time to get furniture set up, consider packing a sleeping bag or tent that they can set up. Have fun with it!
  7. Keep a positive attitude: This is really important. If your children see you upset, there’s a good chance they’re going to be upset. It’s just human nature. If you hit a bump in the road during the moving process, keep a positive attitude and work through it. Take a moment to take a deep breath or a break and assure your kids that everything is okay.
  8. Find reasons to be excited! Does your new home or neighborhood have a swimming pool? Maybe your new town has a zoo or a park with a huge playground right around the corner. Shift the focus away from the difficulties of moving and focus on the positives!
  9. Plan a new room! Once your kids have picked out their new rooms, give them the opportunity to set a theme. Even though it may take some time to get the room set up to their liking, it will surely bring excitement and something to look forward to!
  10. Take some time to explore your new surroundings: Nobody says you have to unpack and set up your new home before having some fun! You’ve likely done some research beforehand, so take a much-needed break with your family and explore what your new community has to offer. Try that new restaurant you’ve heard rave reviews about or pay a visit to that park in your neighborhood. Embrace your new community and enjoy yourselves!
